What is Corrugated Board?
Corrugated board—also widely known as corrugated fiberboard or corrugated cardboard—is a highly durable, lightweight, and versatile paper-based material primarily used for manufacturing shipping boxes, retail displays, and protective packaging. It includes all types of heavy-duty paper that can include card stock, paperboard, and corrugated fiberboard. However, when the average person thinks about cardboard, the first image that pops into their head is likely corrugated fiberboard. Corrugated cardboard is made by gluing a flat sheet of paper to a wavy sheet of paper. All corrugated cardboard have a wavy texture when viewed from the side.
Unlike a flat, standard piece of cardboard (such as cereal box paperboard), corrugated board features a multi-layered "sandwich" architecture designed to absorb shocks, resist crushing, and support massive loads.
What types of corrugated boards are available?
Single Face Liner —Doesn’t have the durability that other types of corrugated packaging materials have, but is very cheap to produce and can provide an extra layer of protection to already packaged products.
Single Wall - 3 Ply Board —The most common style corrugated cardboard. This is good for light items.
Double Wall - 5 Ply Board —Much more resistant to breaking when stacked. This type of corrugated is commonly used for larger industrial containers. A custom made double wall box would be ideal for shipping products that require a higher level of protection and where the weight of the contents are increased.
Triple Wall - 7 Ply Board —Strong enough to be a substitute for wood. It has traditionally been used for shipping heavy duty items such as metal parts, chemicals, export, etc.
